The S5 has the 3.0 V6 which is less power stock. Both are well regarded as reliable. The S6 is a better built car with nicer interior and by virtue of its longer wheel base will be softer without much sacrifice in terms of pitch and yaw handling character. It also has air ride so it can be a cloud or pretty sporty.
Driven both 8V S3 and B9 A5 Sportback. The S3 definitely is more raw and about speed, but the A5 is definitely the car I pick on a daily commute. The car looks great, has more space and the liftback design definitely wins in practicality. Also, the A5 is MLB platform and has arguably the better quattro system.
The two cars will have identical length as far as the space between the front and rear seat goes. The difference is in rear headroom with the S4 having more due to its form factor. With a child seat, I doubt this will be much of an issue but certainly something to consider if you have other people riding back there. jorban1500.
