Valve is returning to the Half-Life series (and game making) with a vengeance, and it's using Half-Life: Alyx as an opportunity to discuss its long and troubled history with this franchise

Along with everyone else, I played Half-Life: Alyx expecting a standalone prequel that would expand on the series' mythology, but in a way that didn't step on the toes of a potential sequel to Half-Life 2. Then, as the credits rolled, I realised that Valve had just set the gears in motion to continue the story of Gordon Freeman.
While Alyx and the supporting cast have aged well, going back to Half-Life 2 now, one of the few things that feels a little quaint is Freeman's inability to speak.
